Porter Airlines will begin charging its passengers for a first checked bag on its flights starting May 14.

The new policy will see the short-haul carrier begin charging between $25 and $28.25 for a first checked bag. It will also make Porter the first Canadian airline to charge for a first checked bag on domestic flights.

Brad Cicero, Porter spokesman, said the airline made the decision to start charging for a first checked bag on its domestic flights to bring it in line with its current rules on U.S. transborder routes, which have had the fee for roughly a year.
